Hotel Russell

Hotel Russell (now known as Kimpton Fitzroy).

Named after the Russell family which the Duke of Bedford comes from, the hotel was designed by architect Charles Fitzroy Doll in 1898 in the French-Renaissance style. Doll based his design on the Chateau de Madrid, a palace in Paris. He’s famous for designing the dining room of the RMS Titanic which he based on the one in the Hotel Russell.

The hotel “Lucky George”, a bronze dragon on the second-floor stairs, is an identical copy also seen on the Titanic.

Within a major refurbishment of this landmark, Decontaminate secured the contract to carry out the asbestos abatement which involved the removal of large-scale asbestos pipe insulation and asbestos insulating board throughout the hotel.

The hotel remained fully operational throughout the first phase and works needed to be planned to ensure minimal disruption to the hotel’s operation. Once again, we delivered the project with limited space for site decontamination facilities, waste storage and noise restrictions.

This £ 2.5 million package was completed over 6 months by a team of up to 60 operatives.
